Being a Las Vegan since August 1977, (the month Elvis Presley died) has been an interesting ride for me. My parents brought me here at the age of ten from a small farming town in Washington State. I hated it here in the beginning. Now that the city has a lot more green going on it's more liveble than it used to be. Although it has changed in many ways. The job search nowadays is quite the ordeal. Now it takes up to two months for the hiring process at most of the resorts. I was one of the lucky ones and was actually called in for an interview at one of MGM's many hotels here. Just for a gift shop or out at the pool kind of position, nothing elaborate or anything. I applied on March 15th 2012 and I was called Saturday March 24th at 6:30pm for an interview the following day. The interview went well as I have already worked for MGM Resorts three different times in my past... Circus Circus Buffet as a Food Runner back in the 1980's, Mandalay Bay Resort in Spa Mandalay as a Massage Therapist, and The Luxor Nurture Spa as a Massage Therapist. This helps with your hiring process I suppose. My interview was the very next day on Sunday March 25th. The Manager let me know I had a real good chance at getting the position. She let me know that I should hear something the following Thursday and if not then it would be that next Monday. Monday came and it was 5:00 pm and I hadn't heard anything yet. Me being impatient and frustrated after filling out 22 applications earlier in the month, went ahead and called the Manager and asked her how everything was going. She had just gotten in and wanted my phone number to call me back. She never called me back, but on April 5th I received a phone call from MGM Career Center. He asked me to go to a hair drug testing place and let them know Aria has sent me. I did so that very day. I ended up calling a girlfriend whom I hadn't seen in years, since it was on the opposite side of town (Sunset and Eastern area) I was on and made a day of it. We had a light lunch at Red Robin and caught up on everything. Sure was nice to see her again. The drug testing place let me know Aria should get the results by Monday April 9th and I should here something from ARIA within a week after that.
So, here I am waiting patiently for their call.
As for another interview I had at one of the clothing shops at Premium Outlets North on March 28th, it went so well that they called me back that very afternoon and offered me the job. Unfortunately I had to decline due to their strict dress code. I am looking for a job that will pay for my bills, not one that I will have to spend all of my paychecks on clothes to work in.
I've had two interview's at MACY's already but it is an On Call position and I want to make ARIA my first job and MACY's the second. Unless ARIA offers me more than the 30 hrs I was told about. I have to wait to call MACY's and let them know my schedule for ARIA before I go any farther with them.
My husband is a whole can of worms about his job search...he's a carpenter/metal stud framer of 30 yrs and is jobless now. He has traveled to Colorado and was lied to about the specifics and left there to come home and then went Portland, OR and they hired him for 50-60 hrs per week but then had him and his buddy he went with sitting around waiting for the job to start. They were from out of town and can't wait around for a job to start, they need work NOW! So they left and came home. Geez, how are we going to pay rent and bills, we've already borrowed all we can and we don't have unemployment coming in like our friends do. It's getting down to the nitty gritty wire...Ugh! And trying to stay positive and get along when money is tight...boy that's a job all by itself sometimes....
